DEGREE NECK KIT INSTALLATION
General
Install for 3,5 and 7 Degree Neck Cup and Bearing Sets
1. Remove the fork assembly
2. Mark the
centerline of the neck. Drawing a line down the front of the neck can
be a visual aid in keeping things straight. Remove gas tank and accessories
as needed.
TIPS; You need to find
the front center of the neck top and bottom. This is quickly determined
by running two straight edges on either side of the frame from back bone
tube to neck, measure between them to find your center points and use
a fine tip marker or punch to mark the front of the neck. If downtubes
are an obstruction put the straight edge between them under the center. If
you need 4 hands and your arms are not equipped get a friend to help!
Laser pointers can be helpful.
3. Clear the neck of any obstruction to your new 3 degree stem angle
4.Install the upper cup marked with a "T" and a small punch
mark or dot. Dot faces forward and aligns with your centerline mark.
5. Install the lower cup marked with a small punch mark or dot. Dot faces
forward and aligns with your centerline mark.Dot is center of stop tab
if so equipped. Drill the lower neck for 1/8" roll pins if your kit
has a stop tab. Drill 3/8" into frame using a 1/8" bit.
TIPS; All marks on the
neck and small punch marks on the cups should be in line down the front
of the neck.
Use a long piece of 3/4" threaded rod with nuts and washers on either
end through the neck and cups and tighten slowly to pull the cups into
place.
Use some grease or oil, this is especially important for preassembly situations!
A few taps with a hammer and block of wood can help. Don't beat metal
on metal!
6. Replace fork and any accessories removed earlier
Lately the manufacturer has been putting the spacer rings on some of the
cups these are NOT PRESSED ON. They are a snug fit but can be pushed on
by hand. Some applications do not require the use of these spacers so
they have to be removed. If you heat the ring a little with a butane lighter
they will probably fall off, if not start with something thin like a butter
knife and with the cup on a block of wood (so you dont scratch the chrome)
tap the blade LIGHTLY in between the cup and ring. If
you use metal tools for this Extreme caution must be
excerised to not damage the parts and finish!Turn the unit over and tap
between cup and ring on the other side. Keep working around and as the
gap between gets larger substitute for a thicker wedge tool and use something
that will not scar the chrome such as a hard wood or plastic wedge. DO
NOT put the ring and cup in a vise! This will only squeeze the ring onto
the cup tighter and possibly bend it out of round! We will not be responsible
for mishandling!
