A single part number provides coverage for all 1999-2003 carbureted Twin Cam 88® engines. The TC88 is constructed with a low profile machined billet aluminum housing. The TC88 offers easy plug-in installation and all the switches are accessible from the top - a significant advantage for most installations.

Five rotary switches are used to set the operating modes, adjust the initial timing and timing advance, and select the RPM limit. Since the new Twin Cam 88® engine uses a non-adjustable crankshaft position sensor, mechanical timing adjustments are no longer possible. The TC88 solves this problem with a switch for setting the initial timing. A second switch sets the slope of the advance curve. The combination of these two switches allows the user to optimize the timing advance for a wide range of applications - from stock to highly modified engines. H-D® motorcycles with the Twin Cam 88® engine have a check engine warning LED on the instrument cluster. The TC88 communicates basic diagnostic information by blinking codes on the check engine LED. This eliminates the need for an expensive scan tool. Typical diagnostic codes include failed sensors or low/high battery voltage.
An optional USB interface (P/N USB-INTF) and Windows compatible software allow the use of a laptop PC to program a custom advance curve for precise dyno tuning and access additional features such as rear cylinder timing offset. The USB interface plugs into the existing H-D® diagnostic connector on the motorcycle wiring harness. The USB interface is sold separately, but Windows compatible software is available for download. The software will operate in demo mode without an ignition attached.

Two part numbers are available. The difference is in the mating connector. Model 1006 has a 7 pin connector and is intended for 1990-1994 H-D® motorcycles. Model 1007 has an 8 pin connector and is intended for later models. The external module offers easy plug-in installation and is ideal as a do-it-yourself item. Models 1006 and 1007 are intended for electric start applications only and are not compatible with kick start engines.

The unit is constructed with a low profile machined billet aluminum housings. With the exception of external mounting and plug-in connection, all other features are the same as the Model 1005 internal ignition. Four rotary switches are used to set the operating modes (such as single or dual fire), adjust the timing advance, and select the RPM limit. Two diagnostic LEDs indicate status and the state of the vacuum switch (VOES). The status LED is also used for static timing, as it will flash when the engine reaches top dead center (TDC).

The unit offers two advance curve families - street and race. You can also adjust the slope of the selected advance curve. The user can optimize the timing advance for a wide range of applications - from stock to highly modified engines. Switch selectable single or dual fire mode allows you to initially install the unit and run it in dual fire mode with your stock coil. You can then easily upgrade to single fire by adding an appropriate coil. If you have a tach, it will continue to operate properly (some competitive systems require that you purchase a tach adapter).

A special feature allows use of the tachometer wire for a link to a laptop PC when the engine is not running. While the customer does not require the PC link for any normal setup or operation, it can be used to access additional features for precise dyno tuning (such as programming a custom advance curve and setting rear cylinder timing offset). Our new USB interface (P/N USB-INTF) is used for this purpose. The USB interface is sold separately, but Windows compatible software is available for download. The software will operate in demo mode without an ignition attached.

Note: When using HI-4 Single Fire Ignition with “Dual Plug Cylinder Heads”, two dual fire coils must be used (Crane Cams #8-3002 or 8-3006). Both the spark plug wires from one coil will go to the front cylinder, while both plug wire from the other coil will go to the rear cylinder.
Single Fire: Just the spark plug for the piston that is in its compression stroke will be fired. The other piston, being in its overlap position will not be ignited. Dual Fire: Both spark plugs are fired simultaneously at the time only one piston is in its compression stroke. This is the way the stock motor works. Single Plug: One spark plug in each head. Total of 2 spark plugs in one engine. Dual Plug: Two spark plugs in each head. Total of 4 spark plugs in one engine.

Crane HI4TC Ignition for TC88
Carbureted Engine Models
offers multi-spark performance, variable advance curves and a digital rev limiter. It is a plug in replacement of the stock module and is compatible with the factory security system.
A crankshaft position sensor is employed to establish accurate firing. Rear cylinder timing can be offset from -5° to +4°; the same for initial timing. Both are easily adjusted by means of rotary switch on the unit. An additional
rotary switch is used to select the advance curve, with choice of ten families. This enables the ignition to optimize the performance potential of the Twin-Cam 88® in any stage, from stock to wildly modified. Rotary switches also control the built-in Sequential Rev Limiter, which is adjustable from 1,500 to 9,900 RPM, and won’t cause “popping and banging” like conventional
rev limiters. Benefits of multiple spark system include easier starting (hot or
cold), better low-speed driveability and off-idle response. It pulses up to nine sparks per cycle at idle and three sparks ups to 6,000 RPM, which also stops spark plug fouling and lean-surge.
